During the lesson we experimented with using a bright flash to make the foreground of the image stand out from the background - also makes the background look flat. With the camera first set to expose the background at 0, you then change the settings to suit the brightness of the flash.
We then experimented with putting the lighting behind the subject to create a halo type effect with their hair. Then we lit the background as well as the subject to make a fashion shoot style of photograph.
